Our lawn is beginning to show signs of the gorgeous, lush green glow that spring and summer bring to us. As much as I love winter and the magical beauty of snow in a mostly monochromatic world, the anticipation of color returning to the world is very awesome. I am sitting in an old fashioned, high-back chair by the window in our sitting area that faces the barn. I hear birds calling, and see that glow from the lawn that promises much green to come, thinking of things I look forward to. I look forward to green, orange, pink, purple,...
Spring sprang a pond

Each year when the snow melts away a vernal (vernal: 2. appearing or occurring in spring: vernal migratory movements-ref: Dictionary.com) pond reveals itself out by our willow tree. It is always a little bit different in shape, range, and depth. Sometimes it lasts for a very long time, sometimes it goes away too quickly. This is my fifth spring here on the farm, and the vernal pond is one of my favorite elements of early spring and summer. This year's pond is the largest we have had, and what you see in this photo is actually not the largest it...

You can take that statement, "Beside Myself" in a couple of different ways ... perhaps. But I am actually using it as a play on words. My focus is on the "side" syllable. I have shared a couple of main course recipes the past two weeks from those my son and I have worked on together, and today I thought I would share two recent side dishes we have deployed into the family menus. Unfortunately, these two side dishes are so good that each time we make them up, they are devoured before a camera can be fetched--so I have...

(NOTE: If you arrived here via my email about side dishes and the knit along, that post is here. Sorry, I inserted the wrong link in the email.) This weekend was my grand-daughter's second birthday ... what a treat! My daughter did a wonderful job of putting on a special birthday party for her, filled with all kinds of magic and surprises. A few family friends joined us all for an afternoon of good food, pleasant chatter, and plenty of laughter. By the way, I have made slow progress, but progress just the same, on the blanket I am knitting...

I made twenty dozen of these scrumptious cookies to send off to loved ones this Valentine's Day. A chocolate-based cookie, I used premium bittersweet cocoa powder, doubling the amount the recipe called for. In addition to a standard dose of semi-sweet mini chocolate chips, I added one bag of large Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate morsels so that each cookie would have one or two extra chunks of premium bittersweet chocolate. With other interesting ingredients like whiskey and coffee, these cookies seemed the perfect choice for a Valentine confection. Everyone who received them seemed to agree. I gave my husband his own...
