I live on a farm ... — flowers

Let the wild things flourish

Unpredictable, lush, and abundant. That is how my garden grows. When I look out at our barn these days I sometimes catch my breath at the wild, vibrant sprays of color from the many of wild flowers growing there underneath our quilt block. This accidental farming business is a pretty good deal that gets better and better as summer evolves. The other day I was out picking a few more raspberries when I noticed a huge thistle shrub growing out beside of an old garage foundation behind the house. Purple top hats nestled on the tops of hundreds of thistle...

Love affairs of June

You know what the problem is with June? There are just far too many things to love, be in love with, and fall in love with for the first time. My latest love affairs? Well, let me see now ... I will begin with hostas. This is a plant I had never heard of before I came to live on the farm. My sister-in-law introduced me to them; she has been in love with hostas for quite some time. They are lush and lovely with large flowing leaves slumping into deep and luscious mounds. When I was told they practically...

Last week I met my sister-in-law in one of the nearby villages to have an afternoon tea and listen to a lady speak about "vanity" collectibles; the presentation was called, "Vanity Fair". The flyer we read that led us to the tea described the woman as an antique collector of women's vanity items such as perfume, powder puffs, and compacts. My sister-in-law wanted to go and I wanted to spend time with her, so I agreed. I have to say though that, for me, spending an afternoon hearing about antique powder puffs and compacts was not exactly my cup of...

A few days ago I got out on the tractor and helped my husband mow our three acres of lawn; it was my first time getting back on the tractor since last summer. Side Bar: This is my third summer on the farm, somewhat hard to believe. The farmer who rents our arable (–adjective "1. capable of producing crops; suitable for farming; suited to the plow and for tillage: arable land; arable soil" ~dictionary.com) land planted winter wheat last autumn. The fields look much different with wheat growing in them than they did with corn, much of the difference is...

The Yin Yang of Spring

Yin Yang. That's what we named Cat Cat's two kittens because there are just the two of them and they cuddle together in a perfect yin yang. Yin is the darker kitten, Yang the one with more white on his/her body. They are still very young but have just this week begun to take tiny wobbling little steps. They recognize me and Yin in particular seems to quite enjoy being up on my shoulder, nuzzled in my long hair. Mostly they spend their time sleeping or nursing and almost always cuddling with each other and their sweet mother, Cat Cat....
