This is Rhoda's (my heirloom Giant Tree Peony) first bud to open this year. She always opens right around or on Memorial Day weekend. Yesterday afternoon I found only this one bud beginning to show a little pink. This morning, early, I found that one bud had already blossomed open to this stage. The petals remind me of soft protective layers of baby blankets sheltering precious cargo within. There were four blossoms total open this much first thing this morning. When my children were babies my parents tried to tell me how very different it is to be grandparents as opposed to being parents. I did my best to understand what they meant, but I realize now that I needed to be a grandparent myself to actually get it. So, Dad and Mom ... I get it now.
